The Trump administration wants to reject asylum seekers from Honduras and El Salvador and deport them to Guatemala

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Trump administration implemented a policy to reject asylum seekers from Honduras and El Salvador and deport them to Guatemala. The policy builds on the current “remain in Mexico” policy by designating Guatemala as a “safe third-country.”

Adrian Reyna, Strategy Director of United We Dream Action, said:

“This racist policy is a part of Trump’s white nationalist plan to dismantle the entire asylum system, and prevent people of color from coming to our country.

At tonight’s Democratic presidential debate in Georgia, candidates must commit to end these racist and white nationalist policies upon taking office. They must commit to lead the country towards treating migrants as human beings, and implement policies governing migration where people are #FreeToMove and #FreeToStay. Trump’s anti-immigrant policies go beyond just ending programs like DACA and TPS. Let’s stop kidding ourselves, this is Trump’s and Stephen Miller’s white nationalist plan, and it’s time that candidates name it.”
