Las Vegas, NV – Leaders of United We Dream Action (UWDA) were outside an event in Las Vegas, Nevada where Joe Biden was speaking to demand the Vice President and presidential nominee make real commitments to our immigrant community. One of our leaders confronted Biden to ask him directly: “Will you commit to stopping all deportations within 100 days of taking office?” As other UWDA leaders and Allies started chanting, he retreated back inside the building where his event was held.
This weekend, when asked about his record on immigration in the Obama/Biden administration, Biden told Univision, “we took too long to get it right.” He went on to say “I saw the pain in the eyes of so many people who saw their families being deported.” Biden has refused, however, to stop history from repeating by committing to halting all deportations within the first 100 days if he were to become president.
Karina Ruiz, United We Dream Action Leader, said:
“Yesterday, in Las Vegas I looked Joe Biden in the eye and asked him if he would commit to stopping all deportations in the first 100 days of his administration. Instead of facing me and the mothers who came from across the country to get a straight answer, he went back inside.
While all this was happening his campaign staff shouted “Let’s go Joe!” in an attempt to drown out the sounds of immigrant youth chanting ‘Down, down with deportations, up, up, with liberation!’ I came to Las Vegas from Arizona to make sure Joe Biden heard my voice, and the voices of hundreds of thousands of other immigrant youth who are ready for a president who is going to stand up and protect all immigrants from the growing deportation force.”
Greisa Martinez Rosas, DACA Recipient and Deputy Executive Director of United We Dream Action, said:
“Joe Biden is in a clear moment of choice. Acknowledging the pain from the policies carried out during his time as Vice President is only the first step and the least he can do after three million deportations., We need a President ready to make a commitment. A commitment to ensure that the same pain he is responsible for doesn’t continue happening.
Leaders from UWDA were in Nevada yesterday to give Biden an opportunity to end our pain by committing to putting a stop to all deportations in the first 100 days of his presidency if elected. Time is running out. With a Supreme Court decision on DACA coming in the following months, will Biden stand with immigrants, or will he stand with the deportation force that Trump has continued to grow?
We will continue to push candidates to make the necessary commitments that protect our people from deportation and allow us to thrive. We are committed to ensuring that we don’t have four more years of Trump’s policies.”
