With the new EO, Trump makes immigrants his target again to divert us from his failures during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Washington, D.C. – Last night,  Trump signed an executive order that suspends the issuance of new green cards for entry into the United States. The executive order will effectively end the diversity visa program and keep families apart.

Cristina Jiménez, Executive Director and Co-Founder of United We Dream Action, said:

“With this executive order, Trump is trying to pin immigrant workers against people of color and low-income communities in order to rile up his base, and cover up his mismanagement of the COVID-19 global health crisis. His failure and incompetence have led to the deaths of thousands, a disproportionate number of them Black and brown people.

Whenever Trump is feeling the pressure of his mistakes, he attacks immigrants and signs policies that hurt us and that separate us from our families. We must all reject his attacks outright and push forward an alternative vision for our country, where all people are protected and safe from a white nationalist president and from a deadly disease like COVID-19.

To do that, we need Congress to fight for policies that protect all people, including immigrants who are risking their lives doing essential jobs to keep our country moving forward. In the next stimulus package, we need guaranteed free testing and treatment and economic security for all, regardless of immigration status.  We also need presidential candidate Joe Biden to commit to pass healthcare and financial assistance policies in a future administration that would include all people, including undocumented immigrants.

Our immigrant community cannot have another four years of Trump policies. This election is the fight for our lives and we are committed to defeat Trump. ”
