Washington, D.C. – This week’s primary in New York brought huge wins for anti-establishment candidates, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) and Jamaal Bowman (NY-16). Bowan unseated 31-year incumbent Representative Eliot Engel, while Rep. Ocasio-Cortez beat three Democratic primary challengers.
Cristina Jimenez, Executive Director and Co-Founder of United We Dream Action, said:
“New Yorkers came through on Tuesday to deliver historic wins for both Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and Jamaal Bowman. These wins serve as a reminder that people are demanding change and they are voting for candidates that they believe will be the best champions for working class communities of color.
United We Dream Action was proud to endorse them both because they are committed to deliver on our Free to Move, Free to Stay platform for justice. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and Bowman will fight alongside us in Congress to abolish ICE, defund the police and win dignity for immigrants and people of color.
We know that this election is the fight of our lives and immigrants and people of color need leaders in Congress who will fight against white supremacy and racism that keep Black and brown people from thriving. We are excited to reach out to six million youth and low propensity Latinx voters to mobilize them and excite them ahead of November to elect champions for our communities and to get Trump out of the White House.”
