Washington, D.C. – Today, the Trump administration announced a new memo attacking the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This announcement comes a month after the Supreme Court delivered Trump a loss, calling his decision to end the program as “arbitrary and capricious.”
Cristina Jimenez, Executive Director & Co-Founder of United We Dream Action, said:
“Trump has doubled down on his attacks on DACA with the issuance of this new memo. Make no mistake: by reducing the protection of deportation of DACA recipients from two years to one year and refusing to open up new DACA applications, Trump’s only intention is to deport immigrant youth should he win in November.
No matter the decision from the Supreme Court or the will of the American people, Trump is hellbent on using immigrant youth with DACA as leverage to grow the deportation force to jail and deport immigrants. He will continue to attack immigrants as a way to distract from his catastrophic failures dealing with the COVID-19 global health and economic crisis.
Republicans are also complicit in these attacks. They have enabled Trump’s behavior and for years refused to pass permanent protections that protect people without hurting people. This election is the fight for our lives. More than 2.5 million U.S. Citizen voters live with a DACA recipient, and this November we’ll need every single eligible voter to vote to protect immigrants.
We will not back down from our fight to protect our communities and are doubling down on our effort to engage voters in the election and endorse candidates committed to our Free to Move, Free To Stay platform. We are ready.”
