Texas – Today, Governor Abbott’s latest anti-immigrant executive order requiring nurses and doctors in Texas hospitals to ask patients whether they are U.S. citizens, takes effect. The order Abbott signed earlier this year in August, goes against the recommendations of countless medical professionals and organizations committed to ensuring that immigrants have access to the care we need and deserve.
It is important to note that patients are not legally required to answer the question and can choose not to respond. Access to medical care is legally protected under federal law, regardless of immigration status.
Michelle Ming, Political Director of United We Dream Action, said:
“Abbott’s latest executive order –which takes effect today and goes against federal law– is a calculated attempt to drive immigrants into the shadows and make our communities fearful of being targeted in the very places we should feel safe. Going after immigrants in hospitals is just the first step towards enacting Trump’s Project 2025 agenda. This MAGA plan aims to make hospitals, schools, places of worship, and more into spaces where undocumented people face violent attacks by enforcement agents. But immigrants are here to stay and refuse to live in fear!
Everyone should have the freedom to see their doctor and visit the hospital to receive care if and when they need it. Federal law guarantees access to healthcare regardless of immigration status making this state-specific order at odds with federal law.
Young people know that we want a future where everyone has the freedom to move, live, stay, and thrive wherever they call home. With just days until the election, it’s imperative that we show up to the polls to reject the violent MAGA agenda at all levels.”
