Washington, D.C. – Today, Trump signed the first bill of his new administration, S.5 also known as the Laken Riley Act into law. This highly-exploitative, anti-immigrant bill will open the floodgates to mass detention and deportation by infringing on the rights of all immigrants in the country. The real life impact of this bill will be felt by millions of Black and Brown immigrants who may be racially profiled, accused of crimes, and detained indefinitely without their chance of due process.
Bruna Sollod, Senior Political Director of United We Dream Action, said:
“Today marks the dismantling of due process and equal protection for millions of people who call this country home. People we know and love, parents, neighbors and co-workers who are immigrants may be accused and detained indefinitely. It’s shameful that 58 Democrats voted for a bill that will target constituents they are supposed to represent and protect. We will continue to be vocal about the cruel and frankly expensive impact this will have on all Americans. This bill is a reminder that we must reject bad, inhumane policies that do nothing to make our communities safer.”
