Washington, D.C. – Late last week, NBC Miami confirmed that a 24-year-old middle school science teacher who they reported was also a DACA recipient, was unjustly deported by ICE—ripped from his classroom, his students, and the community he’s built his life in.

His removal is a devastating example of the cruelty of mass deportations, which violently uproots people from the lives they’ve built and has devastating ripple effects on the communities around them that they are deeply a part of. United We Dream Action demands this teacher’s immediate return and full transparency from the federal government and the teacher’s Representative Mario Díaz-Balart about any and all actions being taken by the Trump administration to target DACA recipients.

Bruna Sollod, Senior Political Director of United We Dream Action, said:

“A young teacher—an educator—was just taken from his community, his students and his classroom and deported. It is disgraceful that Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart, who has spent years making empty promises to the immigrants and Latinos in his district, is choosing silence and complicity when ICE deported one of his own constituents. These are real people with real lives, people who have dedicated themselves to our communities, teaching children, and caring for their neighbors.

Make no mistake: this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the human cost of a cruel, expensive and illogical anti-immigrant agenda. An agenda that puts a target on teachers while the state of Florida and the rest of the country are struggling to hire and keep educators in schools. We call on Members of Congress – including Rep. Díaz-Balart – to join us in demanding the immediate return of this young person to his family and his classroom. We must all fight back and protect our communities.”
