Washington, D.C. — In response to today’s Supreme Court decision upholding the Constitution’s 14th Amendment and one of its core principles of birthright citizenship, United We Dream Action issued the following statement:
“The Supreme Court’s ruling reaffirms what should never have been up for debate: birthright citizenship is a fundamental constitutional guarantee and a cornerstone of our democracy.
While today’s ruling is a victory for all people who call America home, it is also the only outcome that should ever have been considered and should slam the door shut on any future attempts to take a political hacksaw to our Constitution. For over 150 years, the 14th amendment of the Constitution has been clear: if you are born here, you are a citizen. No matter your background, no matter your race, no matter your parents’ immigration status.
In America, we the people, are the ones who determine the future of our country. Together, we have consistently shown that we will show up for each other and organize for a future where everyone has the opportunity to belong here. That is why our fight for citizenship for all continues.
Our communities deserve more than surviving one attack at a time—we deserve the freedom to build our futures without fear and to live in a future of America where we recognize, honor and protect the immense contributions immigrant communities make to our country every day.”
