Houston, Texas – In an interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram editorial board on Friday, Republican Senator John Cornyn, a staunch Trump ally, continued to lie about opposing Trump on key issues related to health care and immigration. Contrary to his claims, Sen. Cornyn, who is facing a tough reelection campaign against Democrat MJ Hegar, has consistently voted in support of Trump’s anti-immigrant efforts, which include his regular votes against the Dream Act, his support of diverting funds to build the border wall, and his vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
In the midst of a pandemic that has killed over 17,500 Texans and infected over 873,000 in the state, Sen. Cornyn defended Trump’s lies to the public about the severity of COVID-19 and said he opposes a national mask mandate and lockdown.
Earlier this month, United We Dream Action PAC launched a series of digital ads, one of which criticizes Sen. Cornyn for remaining silent during Trump’s failed COVID-19 response and attacks against immigrants.
Norma Gonzalez, Civic Engagement Coordinator of United We Dream Action PAC, said:
“While Sen. Cornyn continues to spew lies about opposing Trump, his actions have consistently revealed the truth. He failed to respond to COVID-19 and protect our communities, he defended Trump’s lies about the severity of the virus, he repeatedly voted against the Dream Act and he failed to stand up against Trump’s plans to waste money on a racist border wall. In the moments that have called for Cornyn to prioritize the safety of families in this pandemic and stand up against Trump’s racist policies that have targeted immigrant communities, he hasn’t. And he never will.
Cornyn is a liar who will say anything to get reelected, and he will continue to support Trump’s harmful anti-immigrant agenda the longer he stays in office. Texans deserve better than someone who thinks we will tolerate his blatant dishonesty and gaslighting. I’ll be voting to get Cornyn out in order to protect those in my family who can’t vote but will be directly impacted by this election. Together, let’s make sure Cornyn doesn’t have another six years to harm our communities, neighbors and families.”
