Washington, D.C. – The New York Times reports that Trump is expected to announce a halt to issuance of green cards later this evening. This comes after Trump’s vague tweet last night on his plans to “suspend immigration into the United States.”
Cristina Jiménez, Executive Director and Co-Founder of United We Dream Action, said:
“So let me get this straight, Trump whips up his followers holding rallies, which are sure to spread COVID-19, putting everyone at risk. Then Trump uses COVID-19 as his latest excuse to ram more anti-immigrant policies down the country’s throat. This is a familiar and sadly predictable move on Trump’s part to use a global health crisis that he’s mismanaged as an excuse to continue hurting immigrants.
This November, the voters will have to cast their ballots to get some social distancing from Trump’s racism and xenophobia.
The truth is that Trump screwed up on COVID-19 – big time. Because of his actions, thousands of people have died so far. Meanwhile millions of people don’t have the health care coverage they need, and essential workers, many of whom are immigrants, don’t have protective equipment. And as people struggle to make ends meet and provide for themselves and their families, Trump is making the problem worse.
Since day one, Trump’s approach has been to incite violence against immigrant communities and communities of color. Throughout his presidency he’s advanced his agenda of hate and division by enacting racist policies to shut the door on immigrants and harm the immigrants already living here. It’s past time that this stops.”
