Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, House Republicans on the Homeland Security Committee voted to advance articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The GOP is using Secretary Mayorkas’s sham impeachment as a desperate political stunt to appeal to their far-right base before this year’s election, thereby platforming white nationalist ideology, dangerous anti-immigrant rhetoric, and witnesses tied to MAGA Republicans and right-wing extremism.

“MAGA Republicans are wasting our time and our taxpayer dollars on these sham political hearings, which are solely aimed at scapegoating immigrants, spreading fear, and dividing us for their political gain. This impeachment is spearheaded by politicians who look for any opportunity to amplify white supremacist lies that have inspired violence against immigrants and people of color in places such as El Paso, Texas, and Buffalo, New York, and used by the governors of Texas and Florida to continue violence against immigrants. We can see through their attempts to distract us from the real issues impacting our communities.
Republicans and Democrats must confront these racist attacks and reject this impeachment. Congress must do its job by focusing on real solutions to the issues facing our communities instead of wasting time on racist political stunts.”
