Washington, D.C. – Today, Democratic presidential candidate and former HUD Secretary Julián Castro visited asylum seekers forced to stay in Mexico under the Trump administration’s Migration Protection Protocols, also known as the “Remain in Mexico” policy. During his trip, Castro met with disabled and LGBTQ asylum seekers, and vowed to “immediately” end the “Remain in Mexico” policy if elected president. We commend the work of the Texas Civil Rights Project to make this important work possible.

Adrian Reyna, Strategy Director of United We Dream Action, said:
“Secretary Castro is walking the walk, and living up to the promise to break away from banning entry to people needing help. United We Dream Action has called on all presidential candidates to  join us in putting people first and committing to protect immigrants and refugees. Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy is just one more way to keep more people out of the country. Earlier this month, Trump announced he was slashing refugee numbers to the lowest they’ve been in history. This is inhumane, and it is costing lives. Castro is showing us what a clear contrast from the Trump politics looks like.

We thank Secretary Castro for his leadership in his visit to highlight the urgency and the stories of the lives the Trump administration continues to torture. By visiting specifically with disabled and LGBTQ immigrants, Castro continues to uplift the voices of those most marginalized, and serves as a reminder to our communities that they are not forgotten. We encourage all campaigns to propose plans that protect immigrants and refugees.”
